Everything You Need to Know About Flea Collars for Dogs and Cats

    Last updated 3 days ago

Protecting your four-legged friends from fleas and other common pests should be a top priority for all pet owners. Aside from making sure they receive regular check-ups and vaccinations, protect your dogs and cats from being effected by fleas by fitting them with a flea collar.

    Flea collars explained

As the name suggests, flea collars are a neck device designed to protect dogs and cats from fleas. First introduced into the world of pet care in 1964, plastic flea collars work by emitting an insecticide that will kill any fleas that attach themselves to a cat or dog.

    The benefits of flea collars

The main benefit of using a flea collar is that it will protect your animals from an infestation of fleas. Fleas carry with them an abundance of diseases and can cause severe itching, scratching and even infection. Regardless of whether your cat or dog has suffered from fleas in the past, prevention is key.

Flea collars are specially designed to be worn around the neck, as this is the area where most fleas like to attach themselves because it is close to the jugular vein. Fitting your dog or cat with a collar will not only give you peace of mind, but will negate the need to use other flea prevention methods such as tablets and dips, which are not as convenient as the collar.

    Precautions to be aware of

It is important to remember that all flea collars have an expiration date. Depending on the brand of flea collar you use, the majority of collars will only last a few months so it is important to replace the collar according to the instructions provided.

Some dogs and cats can develop a rash from wearing a flea collar, which is referred to as dermatitis. If this happens simply remove the collar and consult with your vet on other flea prevention methods.

Cockatiels are known to be one of the most popular species of pet birds in Australia because of their friendly and laidback nature. How To Brush Your Cat's Teeth

    Last updated 15 days ago

Often overlooked, dental care is very important to the overall health of your cat. Damage to, or disease in, your cat’s teeth and gums can affect your cat’s ability to eat and groom and can lead to more serious illnesses. That’s why preventative measures like brushing are essential for good health.

Wrap your cat securely in a towel or blanket before you begin brushing their teeth. This will prevent them from scratching you or resisting or escaping the treatment. Most cats will come to accept teeth cleaning with time and eventually such measures will become unnecessary.

Specialty toothbrushes for cats are available; however you could use a child’s toothbrush or some cloth over your finger instead. Begin very gently, rubbing the outside of the lips and muzzle with your finger or toothbrush, and some specially made cat toothpaste, which has less fluoride and is safe for cats to consume.

Once your cat is used to the initial taste and sensation of brushing, push the lips back gently and rub the toothpaste onto the teeth and gums. This doesn’t need to be vigorous or lengthy, a simple pass or two of the brush over the teeth is sufficient. There is no need to brush behind your cat’s teeth; your cat’s tongue provides the necessary action to keep that side of their teeth clean.

Dental Care Tips For Cats From Animal Emergency Services

    Last updated 18 days ago

The eating habits of domestic cats are a lot different from their feline ancestors, who feed on raw meat and bones while living in the wild; giving their teeth and gums a much needed dental workout.

Domestic cat foods such as minced meats are a great source of nutrition, but unfortunately do not cleanse their teeth, which is why it is essential to follow a dental care routine to keep your cat’s teeth and gums as healthy as possible.

The Benefits Of Dry Cat Food

Including dry food in your cat’s diet is an effective method for helping to keep their teeth clean. The action of chewing biscuits helps to scrape off plaque and prevent tartar build up on their teeth and gums.

Providing your cat with chew toys or firm treats is another method to help keep teeth sharp and clean. Make sure the toy or treat isn’t too hard as this could inadvertently damage their teeth.

    Teeth Brushing

Of course, the best way to keep your cats teeth clean is to brush them. Ideally, commencing this practice while your pet is still a kitten will make the task much easier on you and your cat. Start slowly and gently, using gauze or a small toothbrush, and consider using water from a tuna can to make it more appealing to your kitten. Once they are used to this action, aim to give their teeth a brushing at least once a week.

    Added Extras

Adding supplements like probiotics to your cat’s food or water will help to combat bacterial build up in the mouth and gut.

    Regular Vet Check-Ups

Regular check-ups with your local vet are vital, as well as monitoring your furry friends for worrying symptoms such as bad breath, bleeding gums, refusing food or failing to groom themselves, in order to prevent dental damage and ensure your cat is healthy and happy.

    Arthritic Massage - Doggy Style!

    Last updated 23 days ago

    Arthritic massage

Among the range of options available for treating your dog’s arthritis, one home remedy that is sure to help alleviate their pain is through an arthritic massage. Watch this video for tips on how to perform an arthritic massage on your dog.

The benefits of an arthritic massage

Massaging provides an effective method to relieve symptoms of arthritis by promoting blood flow and relaxing stressed muscles. It is also fun for your dog and strengthens the bond between you and your pal.

    How to massage your dog

The muscles around the inflamed joint can be tender, so begin the massage treatment slowly. Commence with light stroking of the muscles but avoid touching the affected joint directly. This will promote blood flow in the muscles and warm the area to make it ready for further massage.

Follow the light rubbing by gently kneading the muscles surrounding the affected joint. This gentle kneading of the muscles will loosen up the tissue and encourage blood flow, reduce tension in the muscle and promote drainage in inflamed and swollen joints.

Finally, try bending and rotating the affected joints. This will help to promote flexibility and mobility in the joint and drainage of any excess fluid. Be sure to cradle the weight and watch for any signs of discomfort, such as your dog pulling away. If that occurs, reduce pressure and calm your dog before recommencing.

    When to massage your dog

Make an arthritic massage a regular routine for you and your dog, perhaps to warm up before taking them for their daily walk. The massage doesn’t have to be very long, ten or fifteen minutes is plenty, and can greatly aid the overall management of your dog’s arthritis.
